Wunpini Mohammed

Wunpini Mohammed, an assistant professor at the University of Georgia (UGA), made headlines for her outspoken support of Hamas sentiments and calls for the destruction of Israel during the conflict between Israel and Hamas in late 2023 and early 2024. Mohammed, who also goes by Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed, is listed as a faculty member in the Entertainment and Media Studies department at UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. She earned her PhD in mass communication and media studies from The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in 2019.

Support for Terrorism

Following the brutal Hamas attacks on on October 7, 2023, which included mass murder, torture, rape, and kidnappings, Mohammed expressed her support for what she termed the Hamas “resistance”. On November 18, 2023, she posted on Bluesky, stating, “May the Palestinian people’s ongoing resistance to their oppression serve as a reminder that colonialism is not invincible.” The term “resistance” is often used by anti-Israel activists as a euphemism for acts of violence against Israelis.

Earlier, on November 9, 2023, Mohammed posted another message on Bluesky, asserting, “Resistance is justified when people are occupied,” and shared a photo from a protest at UGA, further cementing her solidarity with Hamas during a period of intense conflict.

Hatred of Jews

In January 2024, Mohammed continued her activism by sharing an article by Steven Salaita, a controversial figure known for his anti-Semitic remarks, encouraging professors to support Palestinians and oppose what she referred to as “genocide.”

Salaita became notorious in 2014 when the University of Illinois rescinded a job offer after his anti-Semitic tweets came to light, including one in which he expressed a wish for harm to come to Jews.

Mohammed’s vocal stance on these issues has positioned her as a prominent figure in the ongoing debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, drawing both support and criticism for her views.
