Darrion Hun

As of July 2024, Darrion Hun is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at New York University (NYU) after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work and global public health from the same institution. He is an active supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and has been involved in numerous protests in support of Hamas, a US designated terrorist organization.

Events and Controversies
In April 2024, Darrion participated in an illegal pro-Hamas protest at Columbia University, known as the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment.” The encampment protested Israel’s military actions and demanded that Columbia divest from companies allegedly complicit in Israeli apartheid. The protest was forcibly dismantled by the NYPD, and over 100 students, including Darrion, were arrested for trespassing. This event was organized by groups such as Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), and it led to further campus unrest and acts of vandalism.

Consequences and Reactions
Darrion’s activism, particularly during the Columbia encampment, has drawn considerable criticism, with some accusing the protesters of promoting anti-Semitic sentiment. The encampment itself, along with its subsequent dismantling and the arrests, sparked broader protests across North American campuses. Jewish students reported experiencing harassment and intimidation during these protests, including being subjected to offensive remarks as they walked to their dorms.

Current Status
Darrion remains an outspoken advocate for BDS and continues to engage in activism aligned with the views of Hamas. His involvement in the Columbia protest and his role in supporting anti-Israel resolutions have placed him at the forefront of pro-Palestinian campus activism.
