On April 23, 2024, Kannel took part in the illegal encampment and, in an interview, expressed his hopes for “liberation of Palestine” and the end of what he called “genocide” by Israel. The encampment, organized by Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), SJP, and JVP, was forcibly dismantled by the NYPD, and over 100 students were arrested. Two days later, a second encampment was created, leading to further arrests and vandalism of campus property, which Jared took part in.

Consequences and Reactions

Kannel’s involvement in the protest sparked criticism from pro-Israel groups on campus, particularly as tensions escalated following the illegal encampments. The protests also led to the harassment of Jewish students. The encampment protests across North American campuses were reported to have caused significant disruptions and tensions between Jewish students and anti-Israel activists.

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)

JVP, founded in 1996, is a group that employs civil disobedience to disrupt pro-Israel events. It supports the BDS movement and has been criticized by Jewish groups like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for its anti-Zionist stance and alignment with controversial anti-Israel rhetoric. JVP’s tactics, which include co-sponsoring events comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, have been condemned for promoting anti-Semitic sentiment while using its Jewish identity to shield itself from such accusations.

Current Status

As of April 2024, Jared Kannel remains an active voice within JVP and is consistent in his participation in protests and activism, which is aligned with anti-American terror organization Hamas.
