The brutal actions of Hamas have sent shockwaves around the globe, initially galvanizing a strong wave of support for Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens.
However, history reveals a troubling trend: as international pressure mounts, that initial backing often begins to wane. Within days, critics surface, calling for a more restrained response from Israel.
They advocate for proportionality, urging Israel to exercise caution and compassion even when faced with an adversary as brutal as Hamas. This perspective is frequently echoed by politicians and commentators aiming to present a sense of balance, discussing the conflict as if it involves “two sides” and perpetuating an ongoing cycle of violence.
Yet, this seemingly reasonable stance carries significant consequences. It acts as a subtle, yet pernicious form of antisemitism, undermining Israel’s right to self-defense while blurring the distinction between a democratic state and a terroristic group. This harmful narrative quickly gains traction and is voiced by influential personalities, including certain members of Congress often referred to as “the Squad.”
The philosophy of “two-sideism” is fundamentally biased, equating Israel—a nation founded on democratic principles and the rule of law—with Hamas, an organization that relies on violence and terror. This false equivalence not only delegitimizes Israel’s actions but also fuels damaging stereotypes about Jewish people and their entitlement to a homeland.
Israel’s right to defend itself is not simply a privilege bestowed by other nations; it is a crucial responsibility to ensure the safety of its citizens. Confronted with threats from Iranian proxies, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad, Israel is not just entitled but obligated to eliminate these dangers. This entails not only securing its borders but also decisively dismantling Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
To combat the rising tide of antisemitism, it is essential for all of us to denounce the double standard that equates victims with aggressors. “Two-sideism” is a perilous ideology that perpetuates conflict, sustains Hamas’s power, and undermines efforts for meaningful agreements that could lead to true peace in the region.
